Virtual Exhibit: Shapeshifters
The 35th Annual June exhibit of recent work by artist LINDA JOHNS opens this
week at Lyghtesome Gallery in Antigonish. Entitled “SHAPESHIFTERS” this
2010 collection consists of 13 acrylic paintings on canvas, 2 on paper and
14 new sculptures in whalebone and wood, including a large carved scapula of
a whale, with a poem inscribed on the back, entitled "Unheard Music".
In addition there are 7 acrylic paintings on paper with pine frames that are
carved by the artist. "Shapeshifters" is on display from June 1 – 30.
As the title of the show implies, this body of work addresses Linda Johns’ interest
in the interdependence of all creatures and elemental energies in nature. Following
currents of wind and water, phases of sun and moon, she leads us on a journey
through the ebb and flow cycles of instinct, survival, and seasonal change, with
intuitive wisdom and insight. She points to the powerful, sacred qualities of
the natural world that delight and inspire as well as transcend our understanding.
Two publications are featured as part of the show. The first is a self-published book entitled "Whalebone Odyssey, A Carver's Search", about Linda Johns' whalebone carving and her annual pilgrimage to Newfoundland with her partner Mack Kahout to find the bone and gather the tuckamore wood that are the materials for her carvings Printed at the Casket, the 6" by 7" books are hand-bound and signed by the artist and feature numerous photographs as well as drawings and background information on a whole series of her sculptures. The project was funded with the generous help of several private donors including Marnie Hazelwood and Lee McClair of Wilmont Station, NS. and Shannon and Jacqueline Stevenson of Antigonish.

For further insight into Linda Johns' work as a sculptor, Lyghtesome Gallery has posted on its home page a short video interview with the artist produced by Marley Parker and filmed in 2009 at the Mary E. Black Gallery in Halifax on the occasion of Johns' solo exhibition of sculpture entitled "INVOCATION" held in July. www.lyghtesome.ns.ca

The second publication is a 2011 calendar that features early paintings by Linda Johns that date back to the late 70's and early 80's. It was produced by Lyghtesome Gallery and printed at the Casket. This project was initiated in commemoration of Lyghtesome Gallery's 35th anniversary year and the 35th solo show of work by Linda Johns at the gallery.
